And so Stickly-Prickly dived, and Slow-and-Solid dived alongside.

‘Excellent!’ said Slow-and-Solid (отлично! — сказала Медленная-и-Твердая).‘A little more attention to holding your breath (еще немного внимания на задерживание дыхания) and you will be able to keep house at the bottom of the turbid Amazon (и ты сможешь вести хозяйство на дне мутной Амазонки; to keep house — вести хозяйство: «/со/держать дом»). Now I’ll try that exercise of wrapping my hind legs round my ears (теперь я испробую то упражнение по сворачиванию моих задних ног за мои уши) which you say is so peculiarly comfortable (которое, ты говоришь, особенно удобно). Won’t Painted Jaguar be surprised

‘Excellent!’ said Stickly-Prickly (отлично! ‘But it’s straining your back-plates a little They are all overlapping now (они теперь все находят друг друга; to overlap — перекрывать(ся); накладывать(ся); совмещать(ся)), instead of lying side by side (вместо того, чтобы лежать бок о бок / стык в стык; side by side — бок о бок, рядом).’

‘Oh, that’s the result of exercise (ах, это результат упражнений),’ said Slow-and-Solid (сказала Медленная-и-Твердая). ‘I’ve noticed that your prickles seem to be melting into one another (я заметила, что твои колючки, кажется, сливаются друг с другом; to melt into — переходить в /другую форму/, сливаться; to melt — таять, плавиться), and that you’re growing to look rather more like a pine-cone (и ты становишься гораздо больше похожим на сосновую шишку), and less like a chestnut-burr (и меньше на каштановый орех), than you used to (чем ты /был похож/ раньше).’

‘Am I?’ said Stickly-Prickly (правда? ‘That comes from my soaking in the water Oh, won’t Painted Jaguar be surprised

They went on with their exercises (они продолжали свои упражнения), each helping the other (помогая друг другу), till morning came (до наступления утра); and when the sun was high (и когда солнце стояло высоко) they rested and dried themselves (они стали отдыхать и сушиться). Then they saw (потом они увидели) that they were both of them quite different from what they had been (что они оба стали совершенно отличаться от того, какими они были /раньше/).

‘Stickly-Prickly (Колючки-Торчком),’ said Tortoise after breakfast (сказала Черепаха после завтрака), ‘I am not what I was yesterday (я не то, чем была вчера[86]); but I think that I may yet amuse Painted Jaguar (но я думаю, что я все-таки могу позабавить Пестрого Ягуара).’

They went on with their exercises, each helping the other, till morning came; and when the sun was high they rested and dried themselves. Then they saw that they were both of them quite different from what they had been.

‘Stickly-Prickly,’ said Tortoise after breakfast, ‘I am not what I was yesterday; but I think that I may yet amuse Painted Jaguar.’

‘That was the very thing I was thinking just now (именно об этом я как раз и думал),’ said Stickly-Prickly (сказал Колючки-Торчком). ‘I think scales are a tremendous improvement on prickles (я считаю, чешуя — потрясающее усовершенствование колючек) — to say nothing of being able to swim (не говоря уже об умении плавать). Oh, won’t Painted Jaguar be surprised Let’s go and find him

By and by they found Painted Jaguar (вскоре они нашли Пестрого Ягуара; by and by — вскоре), still nursing his paddy-paw (все еще баюкающего свою лапу-лапочку) that had been hurt the night before (которую поранил прошлой ночью). He was so astonished (он был так изумлен) that he fell three times backward over his own painted tail without stopping (что перекувырнулся три раза задом наперед через свой собственный пестрый хвост без остановки).

‘That was the very thing I was thinking just now,’ said Stickly-Prickly. ‘I think scales are a tremendous improvement on prickles — to say nothing of being able to swim. Oh, won’t Painted Jaguar be surprised! Let’s go and find him.’

By and by they found Painted Jaguar, still nursing his paddy-paw that had been hurt the night before. He was so astonished that he fell three times backward over his own painted tail without stopping.

‘Good morning (доброе утро)!’ said Stickly-Prickly (сказал Колючки-Торчком).

‘And how is your dear gracious Mummy this morning

‘She is quite well, thank you (спасибо, она чувствует себя очень хорошо),’ said Painted Jaguar (сказал Пестрый Ягуар); ‘but you must forgive me (но вы должны простить меня) if I do not at this precise moment recall your name (если я не припомню в данный момент ваше имя).’

‘That’s unkind of you (это нелюбезно с твоей стороны),’ said Stickly-Prickly (сказал Колючки-Торчком), ‘seeing that this time yesterday (принимая во внимание, что вчера в это время) you tried to scoop me out of my shell with your paw (ты попытался выскрести меня из моего панциря своей лапой).’

gracious ['greISqs], forgive [fq'gIv], precise [prI'saIz]

‘Good morning!’ said Stickly-Prickly.

‘And how is your dear gracious Mummy this morning?’

‘She is quite well, thank you,’ said Painted Jaguar; ‘but you must forgive me if I do not at this precise moment recall your name.’

‘That’s unkind of you,’ said Stickly-Prickly, ‘seeing that this time yesterday you tried to scoop me out of my shell with your paw.’

‘But you hadn’t any shell It was all prickles (были одни колючки),’ said Painted Jaguar (сказал Пестрый Ягуар). ‘I know it was Just look at my paw

‘You told me to drop into the turbid Amazon and be drowned (ты велел мне броситься в мутную Амазонку и утонуть),’ said Slow-Solid (сказала Медленная-Твердая). ‘Why are you so rude and forgetful to-day

‘Don’t you remember what your mother told you (разве ты не помнишь, что говорила тебе твоя матушка)?’ said Stickly-Prickly (спросил Колючки-Торчком), —

‘Can’t curl, but can swim
Stickly-Prickly, that’s him
Curls up, but can’t swim
Slow-Solid, that’s him

drown [draun], rude [rHd], forgetful [fq'getful]

‘But you hadn’t any shell. It was all prickles,’ said Painted Jaguar. ‘I know it was. Just look at my paw!’

‘You told me to drop into the turbid Amazon and be drowned,’ said Slow-Solid. ‘Why are you so rude and forgetful to-day?’

‘Don’t you remember what your mother told you?’ said Stickly-Prickly, —

‘Can’t curl, but can swim —
Stickly-Prickly, that’s him!
Curls up, but can’t swim —
Slow-Solid, that’s him!’

Then they both curled themselves up and rolled round and round Painted Jaguar (затем они оба свернулись и катались и катались вокруг Пестрого Ягуара) till his eyes turned truly cart-wheels in his head (пока его глаза не закувыркались у него в голове = пока в голове у него все не закувыркалось по-настоящему; to turn cart-wheels — кувыркаться; cart-wheel — колесо телеги).

Then he went to fetch his mother

‘Mother,’ he said (мама, — сказал он), ‘there are two new animals in the woods to-day (сегодня в лесу есть = появились два новых животных), and the one that you said couldn’t swim (и то, о котором ты говорила, что оно не умеет плавать), swims (плавает), and the one that you said couldn’t curl up (а то, о котором ты говорила, что оно не умеет сворачиваться), curls (сворачивается); and they’ve gone shares in their prickles, I think (и, мне кажется, они поделились своими колючками), because both of them are scaly all over (потому что они оба с ног до головы покрыты чешуей), instead of one being smooth and the other very prickly (вместо того, чтобы одному быть гладким, а другому быть очень колючим); and, besides that (и кроме того), they are rolling round and round in circles (они кружатся и кружатся кругами), and I don’t feel comfy (и я испытываю дискомфорт).’
