Pau Amma rolled his eyes and waved his legs, but he could only stir up the Sea, because, though he was a King Crab, he was nothing more than a Crab, and the Eldest Magician laughed.

‘You are not so important after all, Pau Amma (в конце концов, ты не такой уж важный, Пау Амма),’ he said (сказал он). ‘Now, let me try (а теперь дай попробовать мне),’ and he made a Magic with his left hand (и он сотворил Волшебство левой рукой) — with just the little finger of his left hand (лишь мизинцем /своей/ левой руки) — and — lo and behold, Best Beloved (и вот слушайте и смотрите, Самые Любименькие), Pau Amma’s hard, blue-green-black shell fell off him (твердый сине-зелено-черный панцирь Пау Аммы спал с него) as a husk falls off a cocoa-nut (как скорлупа спадает с кокосового ореха), and Pau Amma was left all soft (и Пау Амма остался совершенно мягким) — soft as the little crabs (мягким, как маленькие крабики) that you sometimes find on the beach, Best Beloved (которых вы иногда находите на пляже, Самые Любименькие).

lo [lqu], behold [bI'hquld], cocoa ['kqukqu]

You are not so important after all, Pau Amma,’ he said. ‘Now, let me try,’ and he made a Magic with his left hand — with just the little finger of his left hand — and — lo and behold, Best Beloved, Pau Amma’s hard, blue-green-black shell fell off him as a husk falls off a cocoa-nut, and Pau Amma was left all soft — soft as the little crabs that you sometimes find on the beach, Best Beloved.

‘Indeed, you are very important (как же, ты очень важный; indeed — неужели!, да ну!, ну и ну! /для выражения иронии, сомнения, удивления/),’ said the Eldest Magician (сказал Старейший Волшебник). ‘Shall I ask the Man here to cut you with kris (/не/ попросить ли мне этого Человека разрезать тебя КРИСОМ)? Shall I send for Raja Moyang Kaban, the King of the Elephants, to pierce you with his tusks (/не/ послать ли мне за Раджой Моянгом Кабаном, Царем Слонов, чтобы он пронзил тебя бивнями), or shall I call Raja Abdullah, the King of the Crocodiles, to bite you (или /не/ позвать ли Раджу Абдуллу, Царя Крокодилов, чтобы он покусал тебя)?’

And Pau Amma said (и Пау Амма сказал), ‘I am ashamed (мне стыдно)! Give back my hard shell (верни мой твердый панцирь) and let me go back to Pusat Tasek (и позволь мне вернуться в Пусат Тасек), and I will only stir out once a day and once a night to get my food (и я буду выходить лишь раз в день и раз в ночь, чтобы добыть пищу; to stir — двигаться, шевелиться).’

pierce [pIqs], crocodile ['krOkqdaIl], ashamed [q'SeImd]

‘Indeed, you are very important,’ said the Eldest Magician. ‘Shall I ask the Man here to cut you with kris? Shall I send for Raja Moyang Kaban, the King of the Elephants, to pierce you with his tusks, or shall I call Raja Abdullah, the King of the Crocodiles, to bite you?’

And Pau Amma said, ‘I am ashamed! Give back my hard shell and let me go back to Pusat Tasek, and I will only stir out once a day and once a night to get my food.’

And the Eldest Magician said (и Старейший Волшебник сказал), ‘No, Pau Amma (нет, Пау Амма), I will not give you back your shell (я не верну тебе твой панцирь), for you will grow bigger and prouder and stronger (ибо ты вырастешь больше и станешь надменнее и сильнее; to grow — расти, становиться), and perhaps you will forget your promise (и, возможно, ты забудешь о своем обещании), and you will play with the Sea once more (и ты снова станешь играть с Морем).’

prouder ['praudq], perhaps [pq'hxps], promise ['prOmIs]

And the Eldest Magician said, ‘No, Pau Amma, I will not give you back your shell, for you will grow bigger and prouder and stronger, and perhaps you will forget your promise, and you will play with the Sea once more.’

Then Pau Amma said (тогда Пау Амма сказал), ‘What shall I do (что /же/ мне делать)? I am so big (я такой большой) that I can only hide in Pusat Tasek (что /я/ могу спрятаться лишь в Пусат Тасеке), and if I go anywhere else (а если я пойду куда-нибудь в другое место), all soft as I am now (совсем мягкий, такой, как я сейчас), the sharks and the dogfish will eat me (акулы и морские собаки[133] съедят меня). And if I go to Pusat Tasek (а если я пойду в Пусат Тасек), all soft as I am now (совсем мягкий, такой, как я сейчас), though I may be safe (хотя я, возможно, буду в безопасности), I can never stir out to get my food (я никогда не смогу выходить, чтобы добыть еду), and so I shall die (и таким образом я умру).’ Then he waved his legs and lamented (затем он засучил ногами и застенал; to wave — вызывать или совершать волнообразные движения, махать; to lament — стенать, плакать; сокрушаться; горевать; горько жаловаться; сетовать).

eat [Jt], safe [seIf], lament [lq'ment]

Then Pau Amma said, ‘What shall I do? I am so big that I can only hide in Pusat Tasek, and if I go anywhere else, all soft as I am now, the sharks and the dogfish will eat me. And if I go to Pusat Tasek, all soft as I am now, though I may be safe, I can never stir out to get my food, and so I shall die.’ Then he waved his legs and lamented.

‘Listen, Pau Amma (послушай, Пау Амма),’ said the Eldest Magician (сказал Старейший Волшебник). ‘I cannot make you play the play you were meant to play (я не могу заставить тебя играть в ту игру, для которой ты был предназначен), because you escaped me at the Very Beginning (потому что ты убежал от меня в Самом Начале); but if you choose (но если ты предпочтешь = согласен; to choose — предпочитать; решаться на какой-л. выбор), I can make every stone and every hole and every bunch of weed in all the seas (я могу сделать каждый камень, и каждую ямку, и каждый пучок водорослей во всех морях) a safe Pusat Tasek for you and your children for always (безопасным Пусат Тасеком для тебя и твоих детей навсегда).’

listen [lIsn], choose [CHz], bunch [bAnC]

‘Listen, Pau Amma,’ said the Eldest Magician. ‘I cannot make you play the play you were meant to play, because you escaped me at the Very Beginning; but if you choose, I can make every stone and every hole and every bunch of weed in all the seas a safe Pusat Tasek for you and your children for always.’

Then Pau Amma said (тогда Пау Амма сказал), ‘That is good (это хорошо), but I do not choose yet (но я еще не сделал выбор). Look! there is that Man (послушай! вот Человек) who talked to you at the Very Beginning (который беседовал с тобой в Самом Начале). If he had not taken up your attention (если бы он не поглотил /все/ твое внимание; to take up — занимать) I should not have grown tired of waiting and run away (я бы не устал от ожидания = мне не надоело бы ждать, и я не убежал бы; to grow tired — устать, надоесть), and all this would never have happened (и всего этого бы никогда не случилось). What will he do for me (что он сделает для меня)?’

attention [q'tenSqn], wait [weIt], away [q'weI]

Then Pau Amma said, ‘That is good, but I do not choose yet. Look! there is that Man who talked to you at the Very Beginning. If he had not taken up your attention I should not have grown tired of waiting and run away, and all this would never have happened. What will he do for me?’

And the Man said (и Человек сказал), ‘If you choose (если ты согласен), I will make a Magic (я сотворю Волшебство), so that both the deep water and the dry ground will be a home for you and your children (так что и глубокие воды, и сухая земля будут домом для тебя и твоих детей) — so that you shall be able to hide both on the land and in the sea (так что вы сможете спрятаться как на суше, так и в море).’

And Pau Amma said (и Пау Амма сказал), ‘I do not choose yet (я еще не выбрал). Look! there is that girl (послушай! вот та девочка) who saw me running away at the Very Beginning (которая видела, как я убегал в Самом Начале). If she had spoken then (если бы она тогда сказала), the Eldest Magician would have called me back (Старейший Волшебник позвал бы меня обратно), and all this would never have happened (и всего этого никогда бы не случилось). What will she do for me (что она сделает для меня)?’

both [bquT], spoken ['spqukqn], would [wud]

And the Man said, ‘If you choose, I will make a Magic, so that both the deep water and the dry ground will be a home for you and your children — so that you shall be able to hide both on the land and in the sea.’

And Pau Amma said, ‘I do not choose yet. Look! there is that girl who saw me running away at the Very Beginning. If she had spoken then, the Eldest Magician would have called me back, and all this would never have happened. What will she do for me?’

And the little girl-daughter said (и маленькая девочка-дочка сказала), ‘This is a good nut that I am eating (это хороший орех, что я ем). If you choose (если ты согласен), I will make a Magic (я сотворю волшебство) and I will give you this pair of scissors, very sharp and strong (и дам тебе эту пару ножниц, очень острых и прочных), so that you and your children can eat cocoa-nuts like this all day long (так что ты и твои дети смогут есть кокосовые орехи вот так весь день) when you come up from the Sea to the land (когда вы поднимитесь из Моря на сушу); or you can dig a Pusat Tasek for yourself with the scissors (или вы сможете выкопать Пусат Тасек для себя ножницами) that belong to you when there is no stone or hole near by (которые будут принадлежать вам, когда не будет камня или ямки поблизости); and when the earth is too hard (а когда земля будет слишком твердой), by the help of these same scissors you can run up a tree (при помощи этих же самых ножниц вы сможете взобраться на дерево).’

pair [pFq], belong [bI'lON], earth [WT]

And the little girl-daughter said, ‘This is a good nut that I am eating. If you choose, I will make a Magic and I will give you this pair of scissors, very sharp and strong, so that you and your children can eat cocoa-nuts like this all day long when you come up from the Sea to the land; or you can dig a Pusat Tasek for yourself with the scissors that belong to you when there is no stone or hole near by; and when the earth is too hard, by the help of these same scissors you can run up a tree.’

And Pau Amma said (а Пау Амма сказал), ‘I do not choose yet (я еще не выбрал), for, all soft as I am (ибо совершенно мягкий, как я есть = с таким мягким телом, как у меня сейчас), these gifts would not help me (эти подарки не помогли бы мне). Give me back my shell, O Eldest Magician (верни мне мой панцирь, О Старейший Волшебник), and then I will play your play (и тогда я буду играть в твою игру).’

And the Eldest Magician said (и Старейший Волшебник сказал), ‘I will give it back, Pau Amma (я верну его, Пау Амма), for eleven months of the year (на одиннадцать месяцев в году); but on the twelfth month of every year (но на двенадцатый месяц каждого года) it shall grow soft again (он станет мягким опять), to remind you and all your children (чтобы напомнить тебе и твоим детям) that I can make magics (что я могу творить волшебство), and to keep you humble, Pau Amma (и чтобы сохранить тебя скромным = сохранить твою скромность, Пау Амма); for I see that if you can run both under the water and on land (ибо я вижу, что если ты будешь легко передвигаться как под водой, так и на суше; to run — бегать, легко двигаться, быстро перемещаться), you will grow too bold (ты станешь слишком наглым); and if you can climb trees and crack nuts and dig holes with your scissors (а если ты будешь лазать по деревьям, и щелкать орехи, и рыть норки своими ножницами), you will grow too greedy, Pau Amma (ты станешь слишком жадным, Пау Амма).’

gift [gIft], eleven [I'levqn], greedy ['grJdI]

And Pau Amma said, ‘I do not choose yet, for, all soft as I am, these gifts would not help me. Give me back my shell, O Eldest Magician, and then I will play your play.’

And the Eldest Magician said, ‘I will give it back, Pau Amma, for eleven months of the year; but on the twelfth month of every year it shall grow soft again, to remind you and all your children that I can make magics, and to keep you humble, Pau Amma; for I see that if you can run both under the water and on land, you will grow too bold; and if you can climb trees and crack nuts and dig holes with your scissors, you will grow too greedy, Pau Amma.’

Then Pau Amma thought a little and said (тогда Пау Амма немного подумал и сказал), ‘I have made my choice (я сделал выбор). I will take all the gifts (я приму все подарки).’

Then the Eldest Magician made a Magic with the right hand (тогда Старейший Волшебник сотворил Волшебство правой рукой), with all five fingers of his right hand (всеми пятью пальцами /своей/ правой руки), and lo and behold, Best Beloved (и вот смотрите и внимайте, Самые Любименькие), Pau Amma grew smaller and smaller and smaller (Пау Амма стал = начал становиться меньше, и меньше, и меньше), till at last there was only a little green crab (пока, наконец, не осталось лишь маленького зеленого крабика) swimming in the water alongside the canoe (плывущего в воде рядом с каноэ), crying in a very small voice (кричащего очень тонким голоском), ‘Give me the scissors (дайте мне ножницы)!’

choice [COIs], grew [grH], small [smLl]

Then Pau Amma thought a little and said, ‘I have made my choice. I will take all the gifts.’

Then the Eldest Magician made a Magic with the right hand, with all five fingers of his right hand, and lo and behold, Best Beloved, Pau Amma grew smaller and smaller and smaller, till at last there was only a little green crab swimming in the water alongside the canoe, crying in a very small voice, ‘Give me the scissors!’

And the girl-daughter picked him up on the palm of her little brown hand (и девочка-дочка подняла его на ладонь своей маленькой коричневой ручки), and sat him in the bottom of the canoe and gave him her scissors (и посадила его на дно каноэ, и дала ему свои ножнички), and he waved them in his little arms (и он замахал ими в своих маленьких ручках), and opened them and shut them and snapped them (и раскрыл их, и закрыл их, и защелкал ими), and said (и сказал), ‘I can eat nuts (я могу есть орехи). I can crack shells (я могу расщеплять раковины). I can dig holes (я могу копать норки). I can climb trees (я могу лазать по деревьям). I can breathe in the dry air (я могу вдыхать сухой воздух), and I can find a safe Pusat Tasek under every stone (и я могу найти безопасный Пусат Тасек под каждым камнем). I did not know I was so important (я не знал, что я такой важный). Kun (кун)?’ (Is this right (/это/ правильно)?)

palm [pRm], bottom ['bOtqm], climb [klaIm]

And the girl-daughter picked him up on the palm of her little brown hand, and sat him in the bottom of the canoe and gave him her scissors, and he waved them in his little arms, and opened them and shut them and snapped them, and said, ‘I can eat nuts. I can crack shells. I can dig holes. I can climb trees. I can breathe in the dry air, and I can find a safe Pusat Tasek under every stone. I did not know I was so important. Kun?’ (Is this right?)

‘Payah-kun,’ said the Eldest Magician (пая-кун, — сказал Старейший Волшебник), and he laughed and gave him his blessing (и он засмеялся и дал ему свое благословение; to bless — благословлять); and little Pau Amma scuttled over the side of the canoe into the water (а маленький Пау Амма поспешно перебрался через борт каноэ в воду; to scuttle — поспешно убегать); and he was so tiny (и он был такой крошечный) that he could have hidden under the shadow of a dry leaf on land or of a dead shell at the bottom of the sea (что он мог бы спрятаться в тени сухого листа на суше или мертвой раковины на дне моря).

‘Was that well done (это было хорошо сделано = хорошо получилось)?’ said the Eldest Magician (спросил Старейший Волшебник).

‘Yes,’ said the Man (да, — сказал Человек). ‘But now we must go back to Perak (но сейчас мы должны вернуться к Пераку), and that is a weary way to paddle (а это утомительный путь, чтобы грести = чтобы добраться туда на веслах). If we had waited till Pau Amma had gone out of Pusat Tasek and come home (если бы мы дождались, когда Пау Амма выйдет из Пусат Тасека и придет домой), the water would have carried us there by itself (вода бы сама донесла нас туда).’

shadow ['Sxdqu], dead [ded], done [dAn]

‘Payah-kun,’ said the Eldest Magician, and he laughed and gave him his blessing; and little Pau Amma scuttled over the side of the canoe into the water; and he was so tiny that he could have hidden under the shadow of a dry leaf on land or of a dead shell at the bottom of the sea.

‘Was that well done?’ said the Eldest Magician.

‘Yes,’ said the Man. ‘But now we must go back to Perak, and that is a weary way to paddle. If we had waited till Pau Amma had gone out of Pusat Tasek and come home, the water would have carried us there by itself.’

‘You are lazy,’ said the Eldest Magician (ты ленив, — сказал Старейший Волшебник). ‘So your children shall be lazy (и дети твои будут ленивы). They shall be the laziest people in the world (они будут самыми ленивыми людьми в мире). They shall be called the Malazy — the lazy people (их назовут Малазийцы — ленивый народ[134]);’ and he held up his finger to the Moon and said (и он поднял свой палец к Луне и сказал), ‘O Fisherman, here is the Man too lazy to row home (О Рыбак, вот Человек слишком ленивый, чтобы догрести домой). Pull his canoe home with your line, Fisherman (оттащи его каноэ домой своей леской, Рыбак).’

‘No,’ said the Man (нет, — сказал Человек). ‘If I am to be lazy all my days (если мне суждено быть ленивым все мои дни), let the Sea work for me twice a day for ever (пусть Море работает на меня всегда два раза в день). That will save paddling (это сэкономит греблю = тогда мне не придется грести).’

lazy ['leIzI], row [rqu], twice [twaIs]

‘You are lazy,’ said the Eldest Magician. ‘So your children shall be lazy. They shall be the laziest people in the world. They shall be called the Malazy — the lazy people;’ and he held up his finger to the Moon and said, ‘O Fisherman, here is the Man too lazy to row home. Pull his canoe home with your line, Fisherman.’

‘No,’ said the Man. ‘If I am to be lazy all my days, let the Sea work for me twice a day for ever. That will save paddling.’

And the Eldest Magician laughed and said (а Старейший Волшебник засмеялся и сказал), ‘Payah kun (паях кун)(That is right (/это/ правильно)).

And the Rat of the Moon stopped biting the line (и Лунная Крыса прекратила грызть леску); and the Fisherman let his line down till it touched the Sea (а Рыбак опустил леску вниз, пока она не коснулась Моря), and he pulled the whole deep Sea along (и он потянул все глубокое Море), past the Island of Bintang, past Singapore, past Malacca, past Selangor (мимо Острова Бинтанга, мимо Сингапура, мимо Малакки, мимо Селангора), till the canoe whirled into the mouth of the Perak river again (пока каноэ снова не пронеслось в устье реки Перак).

‘Kun?’ said the Fisherman of the Moon (кун? — спросил Лунный Рыбак).

Malacca [mq'lxkq], Selangor [sI'lxNgq], whirl [wWl]

And the Eldest Magician laughed and said, ‘Payah kun’ (That is right).

And the Rat of the Moon stopped biting the line; and the Fisherman let his line down till it touched the Sea, and he pulled the whole deep Sea along, past the Island of Bintang, past Singapore, past Malacca, past Selangor, till the canoe whirled into the mouth of the Perak river again.

‘Kun?’ said the Fisherman of the Moon.

‘Payah kun,’ said the Eldest Magician (паях кун, — сказал Старейший Волшебник). ‘See now that you pull the Sea twice a day and twice a night for ever (теперь позаботься о том, чтобы ты тянул Море всегда дважды днем и дважды ночью), so that the Malazy fishermen may be saved paddling (так чтобы Малазийские рыбаки могли обойтись без гребли). But be careful not to do it too hard (но будь осторожен, не делай это слишком резко), or I shall make a magic on you as I did to Pau Amma (иначе я наложу заклятие на тебя, как я сделал это с Пау Аммой).’

Then they all went up the Perak river and went to bed, Best Beloved (потом они все поднялись по реке Перак и пошли спать, Самые Любименькие).

Now listen and attend (теперь слушайте и внимайте)!

careful ['kFqful], hard [hRd], attend [q'tend]

‘Payah kun,’ said the Eldest Magician. ‘See now that you pull the Sea twice a day and twice a night for ever, so that the Malazy fishermen may be saved paddling. But be careful not to do it too hard, or I shall make a magic on you as I did to Pau Amma.’
