INTRODUCING THE TERM “GRAPHIC DESIGN”

While “graphic design(27) as a discipline has a relatively (16) recent history, with the term first coined (2) by William Addison Dwiggins (42) in 1922, graphic design-like activities span (10) the history of humankind: from (19) the Paleolithic (41) cave paintings (34) to (19) the dazzling neon signs (11) of modern cities.

Graphics” (29) (from Greek graphikos – drawing, painting, writing, description, etc.) is the production of visual statements (14) on some surface, such as (21) a wall, canvas (23), pottery (35), computer screen (25), paper, stone or landscape (30). It includes everything that relates to creation of signs (36), charts (24), logos (32), graphs (26), drawings (25), line art (31), symbols (37), geometric designs and so on (17). The noun “design” entered English via (7) French from the Latin designare, i.e. 'to designate' – “to mark something”.

The two-word term (13)graphic design”refers to (9)the art and profession of selecting and arranging visual elements – such as typography (39), images, symbols, and colours – to convey a specific message to (3) a targeted audience (12). Sometimes graphic designis called (1) “visual communications,” a term that emphasizes (5) its function of giving form to information – e.g., the design of a book, advertisement (22), logo (32), or Web site. An important part of the designer's task is to combine visual and verbal elements into an ordered and effective whole. Graphic design is therefore a collaborative discipline involving writers who produce texts and photographers and illustrators who create (4) images for the designer to incorporate (8) the components into a complete visual piece of communication.

Graphic design may refer not only to (9)the process (i.e. designing) by which the communication is created but the products (i.e. designs) which are generated as well (18). The term in question (20) can also refer to (9)a number of artistic and professional disciplines that focus on visual communication and presentation. Various methods may be used to make and combine words, symbols and images for a visual representation of ideas and messages. A graphic designer may employ (6) a combination of typography (39), visual arts (40) and page layout (33) techniques (38) to produce the final result. It can be seen that the notion “graphic design” is founded upon and closely associated with a great number of art trends.
