Republic of Komi and Syktyvkar

Republic of Komi is a federal subject of Russia. It is situated in the north-west of Russia, to the west of the Urals. Forests cover 70% of the territory and swamps cover approximately 15%. The republic is rich in mineral resources, such as oil, coal, gas and more. The main rivers are the Sysola, the Vychegda, the Izhma, the Mezen, the Usa, and the Vym.

The climate in the republic of Komi is severe. Winters are long and cold, and summers are short, but sometimes quite warm.

The town is located near the place where the Sysola joins the larger Vychegda River. These rivers are navigable and are a major transport route of forestry products from Syktyvkar. Lumber and woodcrafts are the city's largest industries.

There has been a settlement near the city since the 16th century. It was granted city status by Catherine the Great in 1780, and later became the capital of the autonomous Komi oblast.

The tzarist government made the Komi region a place of political exile. In 1921 Ust-Sysolsk was given the status of administrative centre of the newly-formed Komi Autonomous Soviet Republic. In 1936 Syktyvkar became the capital of the Komi Republic.

Syktyvkar is a big industrial centre. There are various industrial enterprises. Syktyvkar is famous for its pulp and timber complex, one of the biggest in Europe. It produces typographic paper, cardboard, wood paper and many other items.

Syktyvkar is a city of science. There is the Komi Scientific center. There are also other institutions, such as Syktyvkar State University, Komi State Pedagogical Institute, and Timber Industry Technical Institute. Besides, there are lots of schools, gymnasiums, and lyceums.

Syktyvkar is the center of the cultural life in the republic. There are a lot of museums and theatres. The oldest museum of the Republic of Komi - the National Museum was founded in 1911. Nowadays the National Museum is the Literature Memorial Museum of Ivan Kuratov and the Museum of Victor Savin. The National Gallery was founded in Syktyvkar in 1943. It welcomes exhibitions from different museum of the country. In 1930 Victor Savin, a poet, a playwright, and an actor, founded the Drama theatre of the Republic of Komi and the theatre still carries his name. The Theatre of Opera and Ballet began its history in 1958. If you are fond of reading, you can go to the Syktyvkar libraries. The fund of the National library numbers 2.5 mln copies, including books in the Russian language, foreign languages and in the Komi language.
