The Sequence of Tenses

(The Past Simple, The Past Continuous, The Past Perfect, The Future-in-the-Past).

При этом наблюдается следующая закономерность:

1. Одновременность действия дополнительного придаточного предложения с действием главного предложения выражается временем The Past Simple Tense или The Past Continuous Tense → Русское предложение “Я думал, что он видит меня” в английском языке передается следующим образом: “I thought he saw me” (применено The Past Simple Tense в обеих частях предложения). сравните→ Я не знал, что она смотрит фильм → I didn’t know that she was watching a film.

2. В случае если действие придаточного дополнительного предложения предшествует действию главного предложения, тогда в придаточном применяетсяThe Past Perfect Tense →I thought he had sent the letter hut he hadn'tdone it → Я полагал, что он послал письмо, но он не сделал этого.

3. Будущность действия придаточного дополнительного предложения по отношению к действию главного предложения выражается т.н. “простым будущим временем в прошедшем” (The Future-in- the-Past). Это особое время в английском языке образуется с помощью вспомогательных глаголов should и would и инфинитива смыслового глагола без частицы to. Например: Не said he would go there the next Sunday → Он сказал, что поедет туда в субботу на следующей неделе

4. Правило согласования времен не применяется, если в придаточном дополнительном предложении высказывается общеизвестная истина →Ancient Greeks thought that the universe is made up of atoms → Древние греки считали, что вселенная состоит из атомов.

The Reported Speech

1) прямая речь → Mary said: “Ilikethis music” (говорится о неком абстрактном чувстве) (все выделенные слова должны быть изменены в косвенной речи) → косвенная речь → Mary said that sheliked that music → Мэри сказала, что ей нравится эта музыка.

2) прямая речь → John asked Robert: “Where did youbuy this PC?” (говорится о действии того, кого спрашивают, которое предшествовало моменту диалога) (все выделенные слова должны быть изменены в косвенной речи) → косвенная речь → John asked Robert where he had boughtthat PC → Джон спросил Роберта, где он купил этот компьютер.

3) прямая речь → The teacher asked a student: “Did you fulfill all the tasks yesterday?” (говорится о действии, которое должно было быть выполнено в предыдущий день) (все выделенные слова должны быть изменены в косвенной речи) → The teacher asked a student if/whetherhe (she)had fulfilled all the tasks the day before → Педагог спросил студента (студентку), выполнил (а) ли он (а) все задания вчера.

Researcher:Good morning. My name is Peter Brown. I am a nutritionist. I ask you to answer a number of questions, will you?

Sonja:Good morning, Peter. My name is Sonja Smith. Of course I will answer all your questions. Ask them, please.

Researcher:O.K. Thank you. My first question is: what do you usually have for breakfast?

Sonja: Oh, I have а boiled egg and some toast.

Researcher:What about this morning? What did you have?

Sonja:I didn't have breakfast this morning.

Researcher:Why not? What made you go to the office without having breakfast?

Sonja:I didn't have time. I was late for work.

Researcher:Didn't you have anything to drink?

Sonja:Yes, I had а cup of coffee. But that was all.

Researcher:Well, Sonya. Thanks a lot. I think that your answers will be of great help. Good-bye.

Sonja:Nice to see you. Good-bye.

Ex.3. Read and translate the text “The Nucleus”. After that retell it using the rules of the Sequence of Tenses beginning all the sentences with the words such as “Yesterday/last week/last month we learned/read/found out that …”.

On the 6th of August 1945, the first atomic bombs destroyed the Japanese city Hiroshima. Since that time the peoples of the world have been eager for any news of anything concerning atoms. People have learned to think of the atom as a very small piece of matter that can break even into smaller pieces. People have become familiar with many sub-atomic particles, such as protons and neutrons, positrons, mesons and electrons.

Inside the atom these particles are rotating one about the other. People have regarded the atom as a very piece of “solid” matter and they thought that the atom is a tiny Solar system. In its center there is “the Sun”, which contains the bulk of the sub-atomic particles. Around the nucleus are rotating the electrons, like planets round the Sun.

Much of the importance of the atom lies in its nucleus. It is the nucleus that can release the new types of particles from time to time. It is the nucleus that provides us with atomic energy.

MEASURING TIME ON THE EARTH

People can determine the approximate time of day by determining where the Sun is in the sky. If the Sun is near an imaginary line drawn from due north to due south, it is about 12:00 noon. Humans have used movements of the Earth, the Moon, and the Sun to measure time for thousands of years. Around 3000 B.C., the Babylonians devised a method of timekeeping using their counting methods, which were based on 60. They noticed that the Sun appeared to take a circular path through the sky. Because their counting methods were based on 60, they divided a circle into 360 parts called degrees. The symbol for degree є was taken from their symbol for the Sun.

The Earth spins and makes one complete turn in about 24 hours. This spinning causes the Sun to appear to move across the sky from east to west. It takes 24 hours from when the Sun is highest in the sky (noon) until it is highest in the sky again (noon the next day). If the Earth spins approximately 360° in 24 hours, then it spins through 15° in one hour. This led to the setting up of time zones on the Earth that have the same time in minutes but vary in hours. A time zoneis an area 15° wide in which the time is the same. Ideally, time zones should be equal in size and follow lines drawn from the North Pole to the South Pole. However, for convenience, time zones are modified to fit around city, state, and country borders, and other key sites.

You can see that a problem would quickly arise if you just kept dropping back an hour earlier for each 15°. Eventually, you would come around the Earth and it would be 24 hours earlier. It cannot be two different days at the same spot, so a day is added to the time at the International Date Line. If it is Monday to the east of the date line, then it is the same hour on Tuesday to the west of the date line. This line is drawn down through the Pacific Ocean (around islands, such as New Zealand) directly opposite the Prime Meridian, the starting point for this worldwide system of measuring time. The Prime Meridian is an imaginary line drawn on the Earth that passes through Greenwich, England. Time based on this method is called Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). In some areas, this time is modified in summer so that there are more hours of daylight in the evening. This is referred to as Daylight Saving Time (DST). Some areas apply local modifications to this system as well. If you look at the globe, you will see that the globe is divided into 24 time zones. Lines of longitude roughly determine the locations of time zone boundaries. Notice that each successive time zone to the west is one hour earlier.
