People whospeak English fall into three main categories: those who havelearned it as their native language, those who havelearned it as а secondlanguage; those whoare using it forpractical purposes:

Beauty Idols

Every day we’re bombarded with beautiful faces. They smile at us from TV screen and magazines. But what exactly is beauty? For centuries people have tried to come up with a mathematical formula for beauty. The ancient Greeks thought the number three was the answer. A beautiful face was one that could be divided into three exactly equal parts: hair line to eyebrows, eyebrows to mouth and finally mouth to chin.

The Victorians believed that a face with great beauty possessed the average features of all other faces. But recent research found that the most attractive faces have higher cheekbones, a thinner jaw and larger eyes relative to the size of the face than an average one. Some people consider that there’s no such thing as “the beautiful face”. Instead the features of models turn out to be just the opposite.

Some have teeth that stick out, others have a jutting chin. In fact, there were some with features that could normally make them candidates for cosmetic surgery.

Facts show that all sorts of non-standard looks still count as beautiful. Just think of Gerard Depardieu.

The truth is that when it comes to choosing a mate, beauty really doesn’t matter much, and sometimes we make a very strange choice.

Rock Music

During the first half of last century rock music developed from two musical traditions in America. One was closely connected with black Americans and the “Soul” songs they used to sing working in the fields when slaves. Those songs were full of sufferings, tears and sorrow and later transformed into jazz and blues, performed by such guitarists like B. B. King and Bo Diddley. The second tradition was originated by white Americans, who had always been famous for folk songs, romantic ballads and “country music”.

By the mid – 1950s disc-jockey Alan Fried popularized the term “rock’n’roll” on a Cleveland radio station, and Elvis Presley created a sensation and founded a new era in American musical history.

Being a white man, Elvis Presley sounded like a black singer, thus combining the two above mentioned traditions of singing. He became one of the most popular singers in the world. At his concerts fans used to scream and faint. Rock’n’roll owed its success not just to Presley, but also to legendary showman Chuck Berry and Little Richard.

In the post-war years in Britain, many teenagers of the 1950’s were influenced by events taking place across the Atlantic in America.

Charlie Chaplin was the first and the greatest movie star of all time. He was born in London in 1889 in the family of two music hall performers. His parents taught him to sing and dance and by the age of seven he was already regularly appearing on the stage. At the age of twenty four an American motion producer offered him a film contract. From the very beginning his popularity grew. In 1917 he was paid 1 million dollars for eight movies of 20 minutes without sound. Since he spoke no language on the screen, people from different countries considered him “one of their own”. He made people laugh every second. His best films are “City Lights”, “Modern Times” and “The Gold Rush”.

Charlie Chaplin created his image himself. He put on baggy pants, big shoes and a derby hat. He wanted contradiction. He topped his costume with a comical false moustache and one of the most famous characters in the history of motion pictures was born – Charlie Chaplin as “The Little Fellow”.
